First, I have to say I’m not too good at English, so don’t let me shy with your bravos, my nose is big enough. And even if I made some mistakes, or all my article is just a stupid thing, keep your words for yourself, all I tried to do is sharing some experience, not to teach anyone English, at least you just give an applaud for that trying hard.
Everybody get difficulties in English, some say it Spoken, some say Listening, while the rest are Written and Understanding ..etc. I got them too and they till bother me now. But I have my ways to get over them. Let me share those to you.

Writing Skill :
I know some of you can not do it well even if with Vietnamese, Writing skill needs talent. But if you have to do it, try these ways :
- Write short sentences, short words. The longer sentences are, the more mistakes they will have.
- Use grammar as simply as well. Instead of using Present Perfect, try Simple Past, maybe it will not be the same in meaning, but it still better than grammar mistakes.
- Try to find words first, put them in orders, than use tenses on them, that’s my way to make a sentence. Stupid ? Perhaps, but it helped me, maybe it will also help you.
If you want to create echoic sentences like in some literature books, I recommend you to swap the places of sentences’ parts, take care of grammar when do that action.

Listening Skill :
Yeah, this is the worst nightmare of English learner. You try your best but all you can hear is some words on the tail of the sentences. I have to say I am too, my Listening Skill is my worst skill. But if I have to face with it, I have some ways to approach the problem. They were :
- Do not try to hear all the sentence, you are not English citizen.
- If you have 3 times like in A degree Test, take it easy and try to hear the main verb of the sentence, you will understand what action it gaves, if your ears are faster, try some words from Subject. On the second time, try to hear the subject and the object, you don’t need full of them, just some big words of them. The third time, check your sentence again for missing word, and if you can not hear anything, don’t worry, just complete your sentence like a fill-in excercise. Maybe the sentence does not exactly like the origin but it has the same meaning in some ways.
- Yeah, we don’t have 3 time in conversation. Remember the simplest sentence is : S + V + O, just hear those 3 parts, Verb always is the most important part, take it and you will understand 40% of sentence’s meaning.
- Spell your word exactly, then you can recognize it easily.

Speaking Skill :
Speaking makes you shy, it makes me too. But everybody have to face it and we do too. Like swimming skill, hard on the first time, but always easier latter times.
- Say short sentences, short words. And say it slowly, not like a train to cover your mistakes. Quick speaking is danger, if the other say : Pardon me ? or What ? and you stop acting any actions or don’t remember what you said.
- Try to find words first, put them in orders, than use tenses on them, that’s my way to prepare a sentence. Then speak it out, that’s the same way like writing. I am not a natural-born English speaking man, so I use this way.
- Speak your words accurately like in dictionary, you help others to understand you.

And last, above of all, confidence is what you need when using those skills. Do not be afraid of making mistakes, everyone did it every time and every day of every year, not only you.
For the last words of my post, I have to say I praise for the confidence of someone when using their English skill, not for the good sentence they made or splendid sounds they said.
Hope my silly words will help you in your English study, my friend. Have some experience of yourself ? Share it to me.

You, my buddies will laugh hardly when I say I just got B-degree but that’s true. But I don’t care, I use English with my ways, and till they help me use English correctly, I continue using them.

AS said share, then i'll share several of my useful exp.i have no time now, just type quickly and get out, because i got to back home ( feeling very exhausted )
all i wanna tell you is about speaking.Because of being bad in this like most people are,i was guided to getting some better things.
In Toefl test, they have never repeated the tape,so you have to listen it fast and correctly.
My speaking teacher said that there were some easy ways for us to understand it correctly.
The first key to understand a sentence is about Verb, main Verb only.Only the main verbs are pressed when they talk, the others is sure not. When you heard the main verb, then you will know some about the context of the conversation.
The second one is the Adjective, they press them too, whichever words the sentences have, they will press them all. So,when you heard the Adj,you will know what kinds of things they are discussing.Knowing the properties of things make you understand those sentences even more clearly!
the next is about Nouns, just like the two main things above.they are also pressed. You sure knew the effect of realising this kinds of word, didnt you?
Adv is also important, but i totally forgot what the teacher had said.but no matter what it could be,and even you couldnt hear the adv of the sentences,i believe you could chose the best answers for your own Toefl test
Never mind about the others, they have never been pressed, but when you know all the V,adj,N,adv, you sure will know what unpressed words are.
i dont appriciate the B-degree,really dont.
in my old class, there are so much guys have B-degree,but still even didnt could they have good points in English subject, never mind recieving 8-10 mark, this is impossible to them.Im not bombing you guys, but this is not too hard for me to get that points.Because i dont consider English in high school is hard, even it's very easy (not too very)
but the Toefl is very very different,it's very hard to get.Im learning it,so i have that feelings
i could understand whatevr you say,but i can't tell you what exact i want to show you, that's my worst,im trying to get rid of it  wonder when would that day come.

8) I think there are 4 skills you must improve when learning and studying English: listening, speaking, reading and writting.
I can get you effort to write that text but sorry to say that it's not enough for you to be a good English learner
For instance: in writting, you say that we must write simple-structure sentences, I think that's right when you are a high school student (in Vietnam) ,however, writting an essay or a research with those sentences is so bad.......
If there's something wrong, just caml down and correct it for me 8)

Errrr, do'nt try hard to get understanding what English speakers say to ya. If you cant hear it, then say "pardon", they will repeat it, dont worry, because they cant speak our language as well. And if you still dont get it, try to smile and say "pardon" again, well, now they will speak to you with slower speed, clearer voice and you will get it after that. In other ways, take time to listen to the tapes so you can improve urs listening skills and you dont have to say "pardon" to those tapes.
Practising like AS 's style just good in some cases, teachers prefer to read an interested work with exciting sentences and good grammar than a work with unexcited sentences and poor grammar.

What the heck are you talking about?you got 640 in toelf?
I know a way that you can actually improve english alot (and fun too) that is watching movies with english subtitle, pretty fun eh,you still can learn new volcabulary while practising listening skill along with your speaking skill, just don't care too much about grammar except that you are looking forward for a career that require someone with tough writting skill.
To kefka and AS::oops: I don't even have an A-degree yet but it is not something that I would feel embarrassed for heheh.

hey everybody , he's just joking , getting 640 scores in Toefl is not as easy as he said it is . I find writing is a bit easy , i don't know why . Maybe it's a talent . My real problem in learning English is phrasal verb but someone said it's easy by guessing but you must learn by heart all of them to understand deeply . It's so difficult for Vietnamese

Teachers do not necessarily perform better in English tests than students. Even native speakers do not get higher scores than we - non-native speakers. High TOEFL scores do not guarantee that you have enough English to study in English.

Well done, Chrono. 640 is very high score, but it is not very difficult to get. A friend of mine got 283-287 CBT and 6 TWE. So, high TOEFL scores are possible for you all.

The golden key to study English : PRACTISE and REVIEW.

Anyone here prefer IELTS? It's more fun to study IELTS than TOEFL :)

I tried TOEFL before but it sucks.
(OH! Over 2 years! My score is useless now! I get 473.)

IELTS is better than TOEFL because IELTS tests in different format (not only in multiple-choice).

IELTS can test your speaking skills while TOEFL must register seperately.

Whats so good about TOELF ? Is it delicious ? There are too many people who spend too much time for that thing and they fogot what they really need. Come on man, think about it, try practice ENG in a easiest and most comfortable 1st, then you wont get any trouble when facing that thing. I dun noe what da heck is TOEFL, but i know it makes my friends became a boring-dude since he was a good guy to play and to joke with.... Silly TOEFL :(

I dont know if those exp fit you guys but for me it réally helpful.
- To learn grammar and vocab: try to do as much grammar exercises as possible, after doing them do not let them slip away, do over again and again (for my case i do them 3 times, of course at different time :))
Learning vocab with specific sentences and circumstances, so that u not only know it meaning in VNese but also know how to use it properly, I mean in the right time, at the right place and use words as native speakers do. It seem hard at first but after some time u'll find that your English vocab and grammar improved. Vocab and grammar are the 2 basic things u need to have to develop other skills

- For Listening skills: to many people listening is really a pain to develop. Not my case though :p. It's easy, easy. Just listen to English tapes and radio and TV. U dont have to concentrate on the meaning of the speech, just play the record. The meaning of this is to get acquainted with the accent. And 1 thing to remember, pronounce correctly so that u can listen correctly

- Speaking skills: think in English so that u can speak in English fluently. U may not use grammar structure in the sentence right, but it's ok as long as the people u speak to understand u. If u're not confident enough to talk with others in English, practise by yourself, stand in front of a mirror and speak freely. This may sound stupid but it really help (in my friends' case). I use another strategy, speak with friends and teachers. Ignore any mistakes u make during conversation, just keep talking, trying to express your ideas as straightforward as possible, dont go around the bush - it just make your sentences dull

- Writing skills: For me this is th hardest and needs the most practice. write about anything u like, short paragraph first then a composition. After finishing writing, check grammar and spelling mistakes, then recheck it. And dont trow it away, reread and rewrite it. Or you may write another essay of that topic but with different view. There are rules in writing that must be obeyed, such as NO ABBREVIATION or SHORT FORM like I'm, we'll, don't... And the words use must be formal (except for informal letters)

There's nothing to worry about dude. Remember this, speaking way is a little bit different from writing way. When you're speaking, you don't need to think carefully about the goddamn gramma, just throw it out of your mind, all you need is to make your friends "understand" what you talking dude. You know about the "key words" dude?

It depends on you dude. One thing I can say that you must be excited when learning this skill. Try your best to learn it at anytime and anywhere that you can dude. You can do some useful works such as listening to English songs, watching English films with sub-titles, or even find a foreigner to talk with. To me, I've never talked to any foreigner, but I believe that I can talk with 'em well with no matter at all ;). I'm always interested in learning listening and speaking skill, especially the conversation way. I always repeat after what they talk in films, what they sing in songs, and try to keep those in mind. Sometimes, I go to book-stores, and always drop by the English books shelfs (this is one of my favourites). If you have a good memory, you can learn right there, it's good for you to avoid wasting some bucks ;).
Good luck to you guy!

Yea, this is one the best way to improve our skill when you're only lonely, or even if you speak with yourself without any mirror, that's ok. And the most important thing is that don't ever think that we're all nuts :D.

For grammar, do as Hank told, watch English DVD with subtitles (not porno )
Porno ain't work, dude, cuz there's nothing to view but some short sentences >:).

Find a foreigner and practice with him/her.
Do your homework, study more vocabulary, read English books/magazines/news paper, listen to English music (and try to make out what they're singing),

have you ever heard these words "communicative approach" ? These words refer to a new way to teach English in the secondary and high school. This way of teaching helps student talk a lot, using speaking skill much more. Hope that our English skill will be better with this method of teaching.
